In March and again in June this year (2008) we have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to help change this.The United Nations Human Rights Council will gather in Geneva, Switzerland to discuss companies and human rights.

It is vital that countries on the Human Rights Council vote for new measures to make corporations more accountable for human rights violations.

Tell the Human Rights Council to stand up against corporate abuse and for a HungerFREE world.

Dear members of the Human Rights Council,

I am writing to urge the Human Rights Council to establish a strong mechanism for holding corporations accountable for human rights violations.

Through its work with poor and marginalised groups around the world, ActionAid has documented violations of fundamental human rights by corporations, including the rights to food, water, adequate housing, health and education.

ActionAid has also documented corporate abuse ranging from expropriation of land, water, forest and seed resources vital to the livelihoods of rural communities.

Women often bear the brunt of these violations as the primary food providers of their families and communities.

I urge you to issue a resolution that includes:

- a statement reaffirming the State's duty to protect people from human rights abuses by corporations
- a statement addressing the need for companies to respect human rights
- a statement expressing the need for the development of international human rights standards for  companies
- the appointment for a three year minimum period of a Special Rapporteur on Business and Human Rights

As an institution responsible with ensuring the protection, respect and fulfilment of human rights around the world, we hope that the Council will continue and strengthen this crucial area of work and protect citizens from ongoing violations.
