Global governance vital to feed poorest

Guaranteeing finance to support the global governance of food security is crucial to support the very poorest to feed themselves, says ActionAid.

This is the proposition being put to the World Food Summit today by ActionAid along with other NGO's and social movements.

"We propose that a percentage of all trust funds, established to channel resources to fight hunger, be specifically destined to support the UN World Committee on Food Security, including civil society participation," said Francisco Sarmento, ActionAid's head of food rights.

"These resources will allow the reformed UN world committee on food security to fulfill its mandate."

The committee will provide guidance to countries and international financial organisations on, for example, better sustainable agriculture programmes and help to make available increased resources to them.

It is hoped the proposal will be discussed by the FAO Council over the next few days.
