Concrete financial commitments lacking at World Food Summit
The declaration agreed at the World Food Summit today confirms the UN goal to halve hunger by 2015.
Although the UN has admitted that the biofuels boom was a major cause of last year's food price hikes, the declaration takes no steps towards international regulation of biofuels threatening local food production.
"The UN estimates that 40 billion dollars per year are needed to cover agricultural needs. Governments must recognise this and up their commitments," said Adriano Campolina, ActionAid's regional director for Latin America.
"G8 leaders have pledged 20 billion dollars over three years but they have still failed to specify how and when the money will be channelled and how the UN will be supported to fullfill its mandate to fight hunger."
There is still no clarification on the financial framework for a global partnership.
